It is my Mom’s birthday today. She is 86 years old. Wow, that’s old. But then I remember thinking the very same thing when she turned 56 and now that I am, should I say, more mature, I’ve changed my mind about how old that is. Fifty six is just around the corner for me and I know it’s not old, on most days anyway. At 56 my Mom was retired. At 56 I am launching a new career.
My brother came down from Alberta and all of us got together yesterday in celebration of her special day. We showed up with a big bouquet of fresh cut flowers, some of her favourite finger food, Kentucky Fried Chicken, a .5 Beer, and a lemon birthday cake with two number 86 candles on it. She certainly needed help to blow those out but we rooted for her and she did give it her best shot.
Just sitting in a different chair other than her wheelchair was a big change for her and with all the extra commotion it didn’t take long she was all tuckered out. One minute her eyes were open and she was chasing her cake down with a hot cup of coffee and the next minute her eyes were closed and she was nodding in her chair.
So I brought her in her room and put her to bed and then each one of us went in to tell her goodbye. She responded to us but never once opened her eyes. I don’t know how long she slept but she seemed pretty happy when I tucked her in and walked away.

Happy Birthday Annette's Mom!! I can only imagine how proud you are of your family and how happy it made you they all came to celebrate your birthday with you. It's a good bunch you were blessed with. I'm sure on the inside it was clear as a bell while on the outside the body stuggled to respond.
love always,
Phillis xoxoxoxoxo
